The Centennial Definitives Study Group was established in 1980 by Murray H. Freedman and Douglas Irwin. Initially the group consisted of Toronto area collectors who exchanged information about the 1967 Centennial issue. As a result of articles in BNA Topics, collectors outside the Toronto area expressed interest in joining. As a result, the founders decided to publish a newsletter, the first issue of which was dated June 1981. The Study Group held its first BNAPEX convention meeting at BNAPEX 1981 in Ottawa on 26 September. More than 20 people attended. Among them was J. Paul Hughes, who did pioneering research on the Centennials, and co-authored with Fred W. L. Keane the first book on the issue, Canada The 1967-73 Definitive Issue, published in 1975.

Doug Irwin became sole editor of the newsletter in 1982, and continued in that role until 1989. The following year, John Aitken became editor. He resigned in 1993, and Leonard Kruczynski took over.

In 2010, the Centennial Definitives Study Group merged with the Elizabethan II Study Group, which until that point had covered the entire Elizabethan period except the 1967-1973 Centennial definitives.
