London to London 1927 Flight and Philately
Marc Castel
Air Mail Study Group
Marc Castel discusses the ill-fated 1927 flight from London, ON, to London, England. His presentation is divided into four parts:
Part I: the flight
Using news reports and photos of airplane and persons involved, Marc explores the motivation for the flight, the flight promoters and flight crew, flight plans, a trial flight, the aborted attempt, and events from the actual flight.
Part II: stamps
100 special flight labels were printed by lithography in sheets of four stamps. Marc discusses the printing of the labels, the proofs, his census of surviving labels, and his success in reconstructing sheets from the survivors.
Part III: the mail
Marc discusses the preparation of the 42 covers carried on the flight, the slogan cancel prepared for the event, and the postmarking of the covers.
Part IV: the surviving cover
One flight cover survives. It flew on the abortive attempt, but somehow did not get on the final flight. Marc describes the handling of the cover and traces its provenance up to its most recent sale in 2022.
The presentation was given at a joint meeting of the Air Mail Study Group and the Canadian Aerophilatelic Society (CAS) on 2 Nov. 2024. Marc wrote an article on the subject, “A Detailed Study of CLP6 and Philately of the Attempted 1927 London to London Flight” in the CAS journal, The Canadian Aerophilatelist, No. 136, Sept. 2023.

2) Canada/British North America (BNA) – Confederate Postal Correspondence during the U.S. Civil War (1861-1865)
1) Charles Livermore
2) Ron Majors
Northeastern Regional Group
This video includes two presentations.
1) The 50th anniversary of the Canadian National Exhibition (CNE) was in 1928. To celebrate, two special airmail flights to the CNE in Toronto took place on 24 August 1928. One was from Quebec City, the other from Windsor. On 29 August, flights in the reverse direction, from the CNE to Quebec City and to Windsor took place. Charles Livermore discusses the flights and the First Flight Covers flown on them.
2) About 51,000 Canadians went to the U.S. to fight in the Civil War, which lasted from 1861 to 1865. Many trans-border covers exist during this period as a result of Canada’s involvement. Covers from Canada to the U.S. are mostly franked with stamps from the 1859-1868 Decimal Issue, it being current at that time. Providing as backdrop the history of the Civil War, Ron Majors discusses and illustrates some of the cross-border covers he has come across.

The 1923 Pictorial Stamps of Newfoundland, the Photographs, and the Photographer, Robert Edwards Holloway
Brian Damien
Newfoundland Study Group
The 1923 Newfoundland pictorials, based largely on images from photographer Robert Holloway, were pioneers in depicting landscapes on regular-issue stamps. Some of the photos were taken on Holloway family vacations in the 1890s. Designers later took liberties with the interpretation of the original images. A recent biography of Holloway reveals the backstory behind the photos, as well as a fascinating look at life in St. John's in the years 1874-2004.

Victoria Red Leaf Issue Advertising Postal Cards: History, Design, Regulations
Chris Ellis
Golden Horseshoe Regional Group
In December 1897, Postmaster General William Mulock announced that certain postal stationery post cards could display advertising on the address side of the card, subject to Post Office regulations regarding the size and position of the advertisement. The Post Office issued a 1¢ post card in the 1887-1898 Queen Victoria Maple Leaf series with the design in red. These cards, referred to as "Advertising cards", were the only ones for which advertising on the front was permitted.
In his presentation, Chris Ellis explores these Advertising cards, showing their usage, the colourful advertising that graced them, how the rules constrained the advertising, and, inevitably, how the rules were broken.
