John D. Arn White Queen Award

John D. Arn White Queen Award pin

The John D. Arn White Queen Award is presented on behalf of the Elizabethan II Study Group to recognize and encourage exhibitors for excellence of presentation of Canadian-only Elizabethan II material. "White Queen" is the nickname given to a spectacular missing colour error on the 14¢ Queen Elizabeth II definitive stamp issued in 1978. On this stamp, the red background colour is missing.

The award, originally called the White Queen Award, was created by John D. Arn in 2004. John founded the BNAPS Elizabethan II Study Group in 1992 and was editor of its newsletter, Corgi Times, from 1992 to 2001. He prepared several major exhibits of Canadian Elizabethan material including one on the 1962-1963 Cameo definitives that won the Grand at BNAPEX/BALPEX 2004 and was reproduced in Canada - Cameo Definitive Issues, a BNAPS Exhibits series book. Several months after John passed away on 21 April 2012, the award was renamed the John D. Arn White Queen Award in his memory.

Award winners are given a pin. First time winners also receive free membership with the Elizabethan II Study Group, and receive its newsletter.

The award may be given at any local, Regional, or National show provided there is a minimum of two Canadian Elizabethan II exhibits in competition or one exhibit that has achieved at least a Silver award. An Elizabethan II exhibit must be entirely from Canada Post material released and/or postally used during the reign of Queen Elizabeth; that is, between 6 February 1952 and 8 September 2022.

The intent of the Elizabethan II Study Group is to recognize excellence in presentation regardless of the medal level awarded the exhibit. The award need not automatically go to the highest medal level exhibit. It should be given to the exhibit that best exemplifies high standards of philatelic exhibit presentation using the following criteria:

  • Layout - the arrangement of the material on the exhibit pages is balanced and eye appealing, highlighting the material in the exhibit.
  • Title page - provides the viewer with a logical roadmap to follow in viewing the exhibit. It is written in concise but descriptive terms.
  • Logic of presentation - the flow of pages in telling the material's story is logical. The material is pertinent to, and within the parameters set down by, the title.
  • Write-up - the exposition is pertinent, brief, non-redundant, and provides meaningful information.
  • Neatness - the pages are clean. The write-up method is neat and tidy. The mounts are subtle and even.

The Elizabethan II Study Group website provides full details concerning the award criteria.

If the display venue is not specified in the listing below, the award was given for an exhibit displayed at a BNAPEX convention.
