Preface to Webb's 8th Edition - Canada Premium Products

The addenda to the Webb's Postal Stationery Catalogue of Canada & Newfoundland, 8th Edition, 2019, are the work of Earle L. Covert. For those interested in these specialized categories of Canadian postal stationery, the entire text can be downloaded and printed for non-commercial use. Use of numbers by dealers is permitted providing the source of the numbers is cited as WEBB ONLINE.

Canada Premium Products include the following:

  • Registered Prepaid Envelopes
  • Priority Post and Priority Courier Envelopes
  • Private Order Priority Post Certified Mail
  • Regular Special Letter Envelopes
  • Private Order Special Letters and Official Special Letter Envelopes
  • Lettermail Selfmailers
  • Request For Additional Delivery
  • Prepaid Flat Rate Boxes
  • Xpresspost of all types
  • Prepaid Parcel Labels

The addenda have been separated from the main catalogue to make the latter more manageable to print (and to carry). To have included the addenda with the printed catalogue would have made it unwieldy.

Prices on previously listed items have been changed in many cases. All prices are in Canadian dollars. To the best of our abilities, these reflect the marketplace.

The print edition – still the meat of the catalogue – is 500 pages. The additional 150 pages covering Canadian Premium Products can be downloaded and printed by those interested in these more specialized fields.

The Table of Contents will no doubt be necessary when first using this section of the catalogue. A separate concordance for those items appearing online is included – to help you find those items already printed in the last edition. However, much of the material included here is new.

Because of new numbering sections, readers should use and rely on the Concordance in both the print and online sections of this catalogue until they are familiar with the new numbers in the 8th Edition.

Check the old numbers in the Concordance to find the new numbers.

Text notes are scattered throughout the Catalogue - at the beginning of sections, and above or below specific issues. We urge readers to refer to these notes when they have questions. If the text doesn't help, we will be happy to try to provide answers.

It has been fun (well, mostly) putting the 8th Edition together. We hope Webb users will have fun working with it.

Acknowledgements

For this online edition of Canadian Premium Products, we express particular thanks to Leopold Beaudet, BNAPS Webmaster, for his help and guidance in preparing these files for easy online access. Acknowledgements to the many other collectors and dealers who have contributed their knowledge to the 8th Edition of Webb are included in the print edition.

Staff at several post offices have been especially helpful for information about the issues of Xpresspost and Priority Courier, which are included in this online section of the catalogue, and are owed our special thanks for their patience in letting us look for dates on the Priority Courier and Xpresspost. The post offices include:

  • Coaldale, AB
  • Lethbridge Main, AB
  • Raymond, AB

Robin Harris provided invaluable editing help and advice in final preparation in all aspects of Webb’s 8th Edition.

Reporting unlisted items

We continue to depend primarily on Webb users for new reports. Many of the previously unreported items now listed in this Edition were spotted and submitted by our fellow collectors.

New information on any unlisted items - accompanied by scans at 300 dpi of the front and back - will be greatly appreciated. For the material included in this online section of the catalogue (Canada Premium Products), new reports should be directed to:

Why not join the BNAPS Postal Stationery Study Group?

The British North America Philatelic Society, founded in 1943, is an outstanding organization with a large membership, a major book publishing program, an outstanding journal, annual conventions in a different venue across the country from year to year), and an award-winning website with loads of information, including archived journals and newsletters. There is great fellowship and communication among members, enhanced by a number of study groups with active newsletters, one of which is the Postal Stationery Study Group.

Collectors who are not yet members of the Postal Stationery Study Group are missing a very reasonably priced opportunity. Its newsletter, Postal Stationery Notes, has been published since 1981, and is currently under the highly capable editorship of Robert Lemire. Published regularly, it contains a wealth of information, research in progress, new issues, and illustrations covering virtually every aspect of Canadian and Newfoundland stationery. Published supplements have included detailed listings of earliest reported postmarks for virtually all BNA stationery, of privately rouletted railway and express form cards, and of precancelled envelopes of the George V and George VI eras. Membership pays dividends in more than knowledge. It offers potential contact with nearly all of the most active collectors in the field - collectors who will exchange information, offer help or ideas, and who often have elusive material to trade or sell.

BNAPS, the parent organization, has a program that allows non-BNAPS members a one-year trial membership in its study groups without joining BNAPS first. For details, contact:
