Postal Rates of the Admiral Era

Bulk payment receipt for 100 circulars at the 1/2 cent
rate; postmarked Kitchener, ON, 27 Dec. 1928

Illustrating all the postal rates during the Admiral era is a major task. As an alternative, here is a table of Admiral era rates attributed to Larry Paige and Allan Steinhart (see note 1 below) based on Allan Steinhart's 1981 book, The Admiral Era: A Rate Study 1912-1928.

Notes:

  1. In a telephone conversation on 22 November 2006, Larry Paige told me that he had nothing to do with compiling this table. He credited it to Allan Steinhart.
  2. The 1928 airmail rate applied to both Canadian and U.S. destinations for which airmail service was available.
  3. On 29 April 1925, the Unaddressed Printed Matter (Circular) rate was reduced from 1¢ to ½¢ per 2 ounces for delivery to box holders and households on a letter carrier's walk. The rate remainded at 1¢ for delivery on rural routes.
  4. The covers on this page do not illustrate the rarest or most desirable rates in the table. Rather, they are just items from my collection that happen to be favourites of mine.
