North Bay, Ontario, a beautiful city located on the shores of historic Lake
Nipissing, is just a short 31/2 hour drive from either Toronto or Ottawa.
With amenities such as dining, luxurious accommodations and a wealth of
four-season outdoor activities, the city has the best of both worlds.
North Bay is a unique community surrounded by lakes and bisected by creeks and
rivers. Lake Nipissing, a main stop during the initial explorations of the area,
offers sunny beaches, excellent fishing and plenty of shoreline and a number of
scenic and semi-private beaches. The Sturgeon River and Duchesnay Falls and
three area entrances to Algonquin Provincial Park all provide excellent
opportunities for adventure. Popular opportunities for water sports in the
region include canoeing, kayaking, sailing, water skiing, pleasure boating and
wind surfing.
ATTRACTIONS AND THINGS-TO-DO IN THE IMMEDIATE NORTH BAY AREA
1. The Discovery North Bay Museum: Located at
the newly refurbished Canadian Pacific Railway Station, the Museum provides a
unique blend of history, entertainment and modern technology, showcasing North Bay's strategic location as a transportation hub for the area.
2. Dionne Quintuplets: On 28 May 1934, the
world was astonished by the birth and survival of the Dionne Quintuplets. The
five baby girls (Annette, Emilie, Yvonne, Cecile, and Marie) quickly became
international superstars, attracting 3 million visitors to the area. The Dionne Quints Museum, housed in the original Dionne farmhouse, is now located in North Bay at the intersection of Hwys 11 and Seymour Street. It contains contains many
artifacts from the Quints' early days and their growing years. Visitors can
travel back more than sixty years to marvel at this miraculous event. The
Museum is open daily from mid May to mid October.
3. Nipissing First Nation Traditional Pow Wow
is an incredible cultural experience that takes place on Labour Day weekend
each year. Events including Native
Dance, Handicrafts and Contemporary Native music are open to all spectators for
a small admission.
4. Laurier Woods, an oasis of
nature in the heart of North Bay, consists of over 200-acres of marsh and
forest with excellent walking trails and wildlife viewing opportunities.
5. Canadore College's Artsperience
program offers participants of all ages courses in painting, photography,
pottery, writing, jewelry, and sculpture. A Country Roads Artisan Tour and many
downtown galleries and artisan shops also present unique art work by

6. The Capitol Centre is a beautifully restored
historical landmark located in downtown North Bay. This wonderful venue
provides audiences with a wide range of entertainment, and is the home of the
North Bay Symphony Orchestra.
7 North Bay's waterfront,
along the sandy shores of Lake Nipissing, is an excellent year-round
destination for visitors. During the summer, the waterfront boasts sunny
beaches, a scenic boardwalk, botanical gardens, a boat launch and marina, a cycling/in-line
skating path, food and drink and the Heritage Railway and Carousels.
a. Cruise along the same routes as the early voyageurs
on the Chief Commanda II. This 320-passenger, all aluminum twin-hull vessel
will provide you and your family with a short excursion around the Manitou Islands or to Callander Bay, or a longer trip on the French River. Visitors can enjoy
breathtaking sunsets and historic points of interest with daily trips from mid
June to early September. Tickets are available at the Ticket Office on the dock
prior to sailing time.
b. The North Bay Heritage Carousel is a truly
outstanding work of art! Thousands of hours of craftsmanship and more than 350
people have contributed to the detailed design and carving of each horse. The
horses represent a hybrid of styles from the past century; the realistic Philadelphia style, the ornate Coney Island style, and the simple Fairground style. If you
prefer to ride a moose, a beaver, or a bear, the Winter Wonderland Carousel is
located next to the Heritage Carousel.
c. Enjoy rollerblading or a stroll on Kate Pace Way, or travel from one end
of the City to the other on Kinsmen Trail. North Bay has door-step access to
50 kilometres of a versatile trails system that lets you explore the city
without ever starting your vehicle.
d. If trains are more your thing, enjoy the view aboard the Heritage Railway
Company, a miniature train that takes visitors on a pleasant loop along the
picturesque North Bay waterfront. Make sure to have the conductor punch your
ticket when you climb aboard.
Guided tours of the Heritage Carousels, Heritage Train and Heritage Gardens
are offered in French and English from mid-June to Labour Day weekend.
